Alpha is a ten week course, originating in the Church of England, in a London Church where they now have 1200 new people taking the course each year. It exploded across Britain and spread to 72 other countries. At St. Edward's many people have benefited from this course, it has helped them answer question about Christianity and enabled them to grow in spiritual maturity.  Questions like -

• What is the source of energy and strength that
  Christianity offers?
• How does one tap into this source?
• What is the meaning of life?
• What relevance does Jesus have for our lives today?
• How do we deal with guilt?

If you would like to explore questions like these, then Alpha is for you.

Alpha is for:
Anyone interested in finding out more about the Christian faith. Adults of all ages are welcome.  Learning and laughter. It is possible to learn about the Christian faith and to have fun at the same time.  People meeting together. An opportunity to get to know others and to make new friends.  Helping one another. The small groups give you a chance to discuss issues raised during the talks.  Ask anything. Alpha is a place where no question is seen as too simple, too difficult, or too hostile.

Alpha is for everyone! It's especially geared to:

• People interested in investigating Christianity.
• Newcomers to the church.
• New Christians.
• Couples preparing for marriage.
• Christians who want to brush up on the basics.

As our society moves into a post-Christian era, many who are ignorant of the basic truths of Christianity are wanting to find out more about Jesus of Nazareth, especially if they can be sure of an atmosphere of acceptance - without feeling threatened, judged, or made to look foolish. That is one of the reasons why Alpha has proved to be such a success. The issues are clearly put and the claims of Christ examined - all in the company of other searchers and in an atmosphere of love and acceptance. By revealing the reality of the power of Jesus to forgive, to release, to empower and equip, new life begins for many.

What Happens at Alpha?
There is a series of talks on topics such as:

• Christianity: boring, untrue and irrelevant?
• Who is Jesus?
• Why did Jesus die?
• Why and how should I read the Bible?
• Why and how do I pray?
• What about the Holy Spirit?How can I overcome evil?
• Why and how should I tell others?
• Does God heal today?
• How can I make the most of the rest of my life?

After each talk we meet in small groups to discuss the questions and issues that come up. This gives an opportunity to get to know each other and to learn together.
