Generally speaking, the best time to prepare for a funeral is right now unless you are in the midst of significant trauma. Advance preparation saves heartache, energy, and even money. We know this isn't easy at any time and it does take time and prayer. This information is meant both to be a brief checklist for families in the midst of making funeral arrangements and an encouragement to those who are planning ahead for themselves and their families. Further assistance and information for families is available from the clergy and staff of St. Edward's. For those who are planning ahead for themselves and their families, two pamphlets are available at the church office: one listing choices about the funeral ceremony itself and one a larger checklist to help you get your affairs in order, whatever your situation, so that all the arrangements surrounding your entering the larger life with Jesus will be thoroughly and adequately taken care of. If you need help please call or e-mail

Ministry is at the center of who we are as a community of faith. Please give us--both lay people and clergy-- the chance to stand with you as Jesus would have us do. We want to listen, to pray, to provide practical help. Please call us and let us know what you want--and don't want--so we respect and respond to your desires. Our tradition includes a brief service for those near death and provides for anointing. Our Book of Common Prayer has a variety of wonderful prayers. We would be more than happy to lend a copy to you.
We normally use one of the services provided in the Book of Common Prayer including Holy Communion. Services can be whatever length and style the family desires, for instance a memorial service (that is no body or remains are present) or funeral services that adjourn to the graveside following the service in the church for committal to the ground or some final resting place. We would be glad to discuss the various options with you as our aim is to be helpful.
The clergy of the parish and other pastoral care givers are happy to accompany you when you make arrangements should you so desire. We do not endorse any particular source for funeral arrangements but we are willing to share our own experiences with various providers.
Floral decorations at our altar are arranged through our alter guild. They are happy to use the florist of your choice and provide consultation about what works best within our sanctuary. Music is not required for a funeral service but can be arranged through the clergy person helping with the funeral. Receptions at St. Edward's should be discussed with the clergy if a reception on our campus is desired.
Further information on funerals including pre-planning and helpful links can be obtained from the Federal Citizens Information Center.
